A trans medical student discovers type 1 diabetes is at least five times more common in trans people than the general population, and after asking for more research on why this happens, says the following @23'45".

Between 6 and 3, average 9 concocts explanations to maintain appearances. Note the glazed look in the eyes and the frozen fear. This situation at low average shock point is unstable. What will it it be: total sleep or waking up?

My thought process while listening:

@23:45 Isaac: “It’s a bad thing.”

Me: “Well, obviously Type 1 diabetes is a bad thing, but clearly, he just means that it’s manageable, that it’s not cancer.”

Isaac: “I myself have minor disorders and would do anything to get rid of them.”

Me: *recalls the feeling of having to constantly make minor adjustments just to control for allergies, general physical hypersensitivity (leading to [potentially public] meltdowns), along having to manage wearing braces and headgear for years on end, and how I had to wear orthotics and that time when I had to put plugs in my ears every time I showered or swam (I had tubes put in my ears since I was born with slightly muffled hearing), along with constantly concealing physical insecurities, and how much all of that made me hate the world, having actual DREAMS of making it all end, and how of course similar feelings would be produced in type one diabetic—how awful that must be, to constantly have to inject insulin when you eat. Then I thought,
“The fact that this soon-to-be medical doctor thinks Type 1 diabetes ‘isn’t that bad’ is more than concerning; it’s the same flawed reasoning as, ‘well, I’m burning in 400 degree flames right now, but at least it’s not 401 degrees.’ Even if the ailment IS manageable, how ‘bad’ in shape is someone gonna have to be before this guy decides it’s urgent?”
